General Comments: |
This stone was much used for building work (shop fronts, steps and floors) since it was durable and locally available. In addition, its ability to be cut and polished as a marble meant it was particularly favoured for decorative work in churches. Although excellent for interior work since it retains a polish and rich dark tone, when used externally it tends to lose surface and become dull (Robinson 1984: 90). |
