Quarries

General Comments:

Documentary evidence shows Wheatley stone being used as early as 1290, though by the end of the 14th century production probably began to decrease as Headington Stone became more popular in the buildings of Oxford University (though the quarries were still working in the 17th century). 'It is probable that the oldest quarries are those south of the entrance lodge to Shotover Park, in a district locally called Charlgrove; for 'as much quarry ground called Cherlegrave in Whateley parish near Oxford that contained 100 feet in length and as many in breadth' was given by King Edward I to the Black Friars in 1303 (Arkell 1947: 40).

Known Quarries: Lyehill Quarry, Wheatley.
