Usage

General Comments:

Wheatley Stone, like Headington Stone, was commonly used in Oxford for University buildings; early records contain repeated references to Wheatley Stone being used from 1290 onwards in the building of Merton College (Arkell 1947: 36-8). For Queen's College chapel, Exeter College library, and New College, 'Wheatley stone was probably the principal stone used in the walls' with dressings in Taynton stone (Arkell 1947: 38). Wheatley Stone was also extensively used in Windsor Castle (1358-68) (Arkell 1947: 39).

Known Usage: Merton College, Oxford: Walls, Lintels and Sills.
