General Colour Description: | A deep black colour when highly polished, dark grey/ black when fresh and a dull grey colour on weathered surfaces. |

Hand Specimen Description: | A fine grained, well sorted, compact, bituminous limestone, which in its natural state is dark grey, but when polished produces a jet black colour. This black colouring is on account of a high content of bituminous matter which oxidises on exposure (Tomlinson 1996: 12). It contains a considerable amount of argillaceous and carbonaceous material in addition to fossils which are easily visible to the naked eye when the stone is polished. The beds can differ from the best quality which are largely free of fossils, chert nodules and microcscopic quartz grains to more fossiliferous varieties (Tomlinson 1996: 78). |
