General Colour Description:

A grey colour with occasional large white inclusions. Often brownish/grey on its upper surface, when in its natural state it has a mottled appearance owing to its fossils. The stone looks darker when polished.

Hand Specimen Description:

A coarse, very hard, bioclastic limestone which is poorly sorted with a hackly fracture. It contains a large species of the gastropod 'Viviparus Sussexiensis' in addition to 'P.Fluviorum'.

General Comments:

This stone is also known as 'Sussex Marble' and 'Large Paludina Limestone'. It is frequently confused with Purbeck Marble although the presence of the larger gastropod 'Viviparus Sussexiensis' which only occurs in the Weald Clay distinguishes it from the former.
