Quarries

General Comments:

Several quarries were active on Bolsover Moor in the 19th century and Knoop & Jones (1938: 20), mentions that stone for Bolsover Castle was taken from a quarry on Bolsover Moor in the 17th century. An old limestone quarry can be seen at Bolsover Moor Plantation on the 1887 O.S. Map. This stone was selected for the rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament after the fire of 1837 but as the builders reached the top of the basement windows it became clear that the quarry wasn't able to supply the quantity or indeed the large blocks required due to the irregular and oblique bedding and frequent joints in the stone (Howe 1910: 195).

Known Quarries: Bolsover Moor Quarries, Bolsover.
