Quarries

General Comments:

It is believed that the Westwood quarries/mines were being worked as early as the 15th century and small scale quarrying continued through to the 19th century. By the last quarter of the 19th century, when the large underground quarries were created, quarrying activity had increased greatly with the stone being used not just for engineering and building purposes but for dressings and the like.

Known Quarries: Westwood Quarry, Bradford-On-Avon.
