General Colour Description:

A pure white mineral when fresh, it becomes slightly cream coloured on exposure. Poorer quality varieties often have a red coloration.

Hand Specimen Description:

A soft, crystalline mineral with a smooth feel. The 'alabaster' is calcium sulphate (a massive form of gypsum).

General Comments:

Pure white alabaster from Chellaston is regarded as being of superior quality to the coloured or veined varieties. This higher quality 'alabaster' generally was extracted earlier in Chellaston's quarrying history.
