Quarries

General Comments:

Quarries are situated in a broad band that stretches from Greetham to Careby and from Castle Bytham to Pickworth, Lincolnshire (Alexander 1995: 114). Pits or quarries must have existed during Roman times since villas have been built of this material. Due to its hardness it was not extensively used until the introduction of the frame saw in the 17th century and from this period onwards it became very popular.
