General Colour Description:

Dark bluish-grey stone tinged here and there with green (some examples have orange/brown spots/blotches across them and are usually obtained from nearby smaller quarries) (Hart 1991: 25) (Clifton-Taylor & Simmons 1987: 164).

Hand Specimen Description:

Fine grained, compact and strong, yet not very heavy. Most are free of spots and blotches, but some pyrite can be present as well as rare veins of quartz and calcite (Howe 1910: 299).
