Quarries

General Comments:

Several hundred pits can be detected in an area known as 'Cole's Pits' south of Faringdon. These pits cover an area of about 1,700 by 600 feet (roughly 14 acres) and it is believed that they were originally as much as 30 feet deep. O.G.S. Crawford investigated these pits in the 1930's and established their function to be Medieval millstone quarries which were probably in use at least as early as the 16th century but have been disused for the last 300 years (Crawford 1953: 102).

Known Quarries: Cole's Pits, Faringdon, Oxfordshire.
