Quarries

General Comments:

Quarried since Roman times and again during the Norman period in small pits. It was around the 14th/15th century that quarrying recommenced and continued up until the 20th century. The most extensive and widespread use of this stone was in the 19th and 20th centuries when it was not just a popular local stone, but it was also in demand in Oxford, Cambridge, Salisbury and London for many large and historic buildings. Smaller quarries to the south on Chiselborough Hill also exploited this stone under the name of 'North Perrott Stone'.

Known Quarries: Norton Quarry, Hamdon Hill,
North Quarry, Hamdon Hill,
Deep Quarry, Hamdon Hill.
