Hand Specimen Description: | Two kinds of stone were produced at Headington: freestone and hardstone. The hardstone was a hard semi-compact stone, whereas the freestone or 'soft' was a more cellular and lighter coloured rock (Watson 1911: 178). Both are almost entirely made up of comminuted shells, sea urchins, corals and other marine organisms. |
