General Comments:

It is a durable building freestone of ashlar quality, available in large blocks and suitable for external walling masonry, and as such was one of the stones examined by the commissioners responsible for selecting stone for the new Houses of Parliament in 1839. It was particularly popular in bridge construction during the 18th century up until the second half of the 19th century and many bridges spanning the Severn, including Bewdley, Stourport, Worcester and Gloucester were constructed of this stone. It was also of architectural significance since its resistance to weathering combined with its suitability for intricate carving was popular with ecclesiastical architects who would specify its use for vulnerable exposed features such as battlements and gargoyles (Scard 1990: 61-62).

Known Usage: Bridgnorth Bridge, Shropshire.
