Quarries

General Comments:

Quarried around Acton Burnell and Pitchford. The earliest record of Harnage slate is in 1367 and refers to the sale of stone from the roof of a building at Harley, it implies that the industry was already at least 100 years old. By the mid 15th century stone slates from Harnage were commonly used in Shrewsbury and despite competition from other sources, production (although small scale) appears to have continued into the middle of the 20th century (Lawson 1985: 116-118).

Known Quarries: Old Quarry, Pitchford,
Park Wood Quarry, Acton Burnell.
