Hand Specimen Description:

Ketton Freestone is a medium grained, even textured rock consisting of ooliths (0.5-1mm in size) joined together by small bridges of calcium carbonate (the crystalline calcite matrix is usually not visible to the naked eye). It can be difficult to distinguish between Ketton Stone and Casterton Stone. 'Ketton Rag' is more heavily cemented with visible crystalline calcite and more variable ooliths. Only occasional small fragments of shell are present amongst the oolite.
