Milton Stone, despite originating from the same geological bed as Taynton Stone, is far inferior in quality. Early uses of Milton Stone were in 1478-83 in St George's Chapel, Windsor, and at Christ Church College, Oxford, in 1525, though between 1525 and 1850 there is no mention of Milton Stone in the Oxford records (Arkell 1946: 65). Milton suddenly became popular after this date in Oxford, though Arkell (1946: 26-7) scathingly condemns its use during the later stages of the Gothic revival: many of the buildings were already badly eroded after only fifty years. Indeed, Arkell (1946: 65) suggests that Milton Stone may have been dishonestly passed off as Taynton Stone.
