General Colour Description:

On the whole this stone is red to pink in colour (often salmon coloured) and named Red Lazonby. There are also some buff coloured beds (pale pink and white) known as White Lazonby. The latter stone is only used locally (Leary 1986: 55).

Hand Specimen Description:

A medium grained stone which sparkles due to the presence of quartz grains. It is a fissile, hard, well sorted stone. It exibits dune bedding.

Petrographic Description:

A mature sub-arkose with quartz grains coated with a thin layer of iron oxide (the grains have a bimodal distribution 1.0 - 0.5mm and 0.25 - 0.025mm). Also present are occasional granitic or gneissose grains, feldspar, corundum, mica, haematite and magnetite (Building Research Establishment: n.d.).
