General Comments:

Purbeck Marble was used by the Romans for columns, mouldings, veneers, inlays, flooring materials, tesserae and inscriptions. It was also used to make grinding bowls (mortaria), ornaments and other small portable objects (Palmer 1996). During the Medieval period it was employed as a structural element particularly in churches, and was used extensively for effigies, coffins, incised slabs and other ecclesiastical adornments. Its was used to form slender polished columns in order to contrast in colour with other stones, in addition to fonts, monuments and paving, all of which were exported all over the country (Green, C. 1998: 14).
