Quarries

General Comments:

Quarrying was known to have taken place along the valley around Roche Abbey as early as 1147 when stone was extracted for use in the Abbey itself. It may have been the unlimited supply of easily worked and very durable building stone in the neighbourhood which induced the monks to settle on this site (Watson 1911: 147).

Known Quarries: Rigging Quarry, Maltby,
Roche Abbey Quarries, Maltby.
