General Comments:

Stonesfield 'Slates' are not actually slate (Arkell 1947: 138-9), but rather a sandstone that can be split to make high quality roofing tiles. They were mainly used in the local Oxfordshire area, though many original Stonesfield slate roofs have been removed and reused because of their durability (Arkell 1947: 128-9). Wadham College, Oxford, was roofed with Stonesfield Slates in 1612 and their quality is such that they have not needed to be replaced (Arkell 1947: 136, though in contrast 'later' Stonesfield slates used on New College Cloister in 1888 and 1913 needed to be replaced again in 1939 (ibid.)).

Known Usage: Wadham College, Oxford: Roof.
