General Colour Description:

Dark blue/grey colour, occasionally tinged with green.

Hand Specimen Description:

A siltstone which has been metamorphically induced. It is fine grained, but has a coarse slatey cleavage which can be split along irregular cleavage planes into slabs c.100mm thick. (Lott 2001: 99). It is well sorted with a smooth feel.

Petrographic Description:

White mica, quartz, chlorite and accessory opaque minerals. (Clifton-Taylor & Simmons 1987: 141)

General Comments:

By the end of the 18th century it was the characteristic roofing material of nearly the whole of Leicestershire and was in demand in adjoining counties (Clifton-Taylor & Simmons 1987: 166).
