In 1871 J Waller published an article in the Surrey Archaeological Collections recording the discovery of a mural in Chaldon parish church; he also provided the first of several interpretations of style and iconography, most of which similarly appeared in the Collections. These are valuable records of a now somewhat fragile work, and offer likely and sometimes ingenious explanations of the subject-matter, as well as suggesting stylistic sources. Since Tristramâs distillation of these works in 1944, and his own discussion of the painting, only one further paper of note has appeared, concentrating on a single aspect of the mural. This present paper will therefore examine some of the alternatives to the earlier interpretations and try to establish the evolution of elements, in particular the Harrowing, which may more firmly fix this painting in its native tradition.
