This report describes the excavation over eleven years of a total of 26 trenches under five directors, as well as ancillary investigations to the east, north and west of the main area. The evidence from the site is equivocal, allowing (at least) two rival interpretations. Both are presented here: the first interpretation treats the evidence as economic or functional, while the second interpretation treats it as symbolic or ritual. The earliest evidence dates to the Bronze Age with further activity in the Iron Age, while much of the report deals with Roman period features and finds.
