Overview

Project Background

The project produced a strategy for delivering an Historic Environment Record (HER) outreach programme for the aggregate producing areas of Warwickshire. The stratagy was the result of one year's research and the incorporation of lessons learnt from five pilot projects. The strategy provides a framework for developing outreach projects in specific aggregates areas.

The pilot projects were:

  1. Archaeology Network:
The first pilot project was an archaeological network. This particular project included teaching archaeological techniques to local groups and members of the public. The creation of a local history toolkit to help people conduct basic documentary research within Warwickshire.
  2. E-Gallery:
The E-Gallery will link to the current Warwickshire online HER http://timetrail.warwickshire.gov.uk and will be a resource that members of the public can vie and contribute to. The exhibitions will also allow the dissemination of knowledge about the history and archaeology of aggregate areas and will help people understand the various issues involved.
  3. Traditional Exhibition:
The traditional exhibition linked to the "On the road" Museum touring exhibition programme. All exhibitions were designed to fit into small and restricted spaces in libraries in Warwickshire.
To compliment the "On the Road" exhibitions a mini project was created to target parents and careers of children in primary schools. This was a family learning exhibition project run in conjunction with Warwickshire County Council's Adult and Community Learining Service. The project took the form of a six week course created using material from the HER, Museum collection and County Record Office.
  4. HER Enhancement:
The fourth pilot project was enhancement of the HER. This involved updating the website and creating an online form which members of the public could use to record any discoveries that they make. Additionally, information from the Waite archive (a collection of nationally important flint tools) was added to the HER.
  5. School Pack:
The school Project was been designed for Key Stage three children (11-14 years). Pupils were asked to debate whether a quarry should be allowed to expand and make a final decision.
