Introduction

The Foundry Site, Phoenix Place, London: Archaeological Building Recording (OASIS ID: waterman2-279178)

A scheme of archaeological building recording was undertaken by Waterman Infrastructure & Environment Ltd (Waterman) for Royal Mail Group and relates to structures at Phoenix Place, located within the London Borough of Camden. The Site was approximately 1.4ha in area, centred on Ordnance Survey Grid Reference TQ 30969 82257. The Site contains several sections of walls from industrial buildings of various ages, some dating from the nineteenth century which derive from the location of a former foundry.

The aim of this programme of recording was to provide a long-term sustainable record of remaining sections of historic foundry structure within the Site prior to its redevelopment. This will secure the proper recording of structures prior to their demolition. The aim was also to enhance, through site analysis and research, knowledge of the foundry which was once located here.

The programme of recording included documentary research, the creation of a photographic record, a measured suvey and report containing a description of the site and buildings, its history and significance.
