Introduction

Chaplains Lodge, St Marys Church Close, Southampton (SOU1559)

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Hall and Ensom Chartered Surveyors acting on behalf of the Diocese of Winchester, to undertake an archaeological watching brief during groundworks for an extension at Chaplains Lodge, St Mary’s Close, Swaythling, Southampton, centred on National Grid Reference (NGR) 443953 115431.

The site lies immediately adjacent to St Mary’s Church and the watching brief was required as a condition of planning consent granted by Southampton City Council to ensure an archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the initial stages of development.

The watching brief consisted of the monitoring of groundworks associated with the topsoil stripping and the excavation of footings for the proposed extension. Although the site is situated in the vicinity of St Mary’s Church, no archaeological features, finds or deposits were observed during the fieldwork.

The fieldwork was undertaken in June 2011.
