Introduction

City Gateway, Swaythling, Southampton (SOU1499)

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Patient First (Southampton) Ltd to undertake an archaeological evaluation on land proposed for development at the junction of Stoneham Way and Thomas Lewis Way, Swaythling, Southampton, Hampshire, centred on National Grid Reference (NGR) 443765, 115795.

The evaluation comprised the excavation of four trial trenches (Trenches 1 to 4) with the aim of establishing the archaeological potential of the Site and in particular to identify further prehistoric activity and to establish whether a projected Roman road from Clausentum to London passed through the Site.
