Introduction

Willows, 20-22 Oxford Street, Southampton (SOU1548)

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Faucet Inn Pub Co PLC to carry out historic building recording of 20-22 Oxford Street, Southampton, Hampshire in advance of its proposed redevelopment.

The three buildings were originally built as terraced housing shortly before 1846. Studies of available trade directories have shown that the buildings mainly remained as tenanted properties until the late 19th century. By the end of the 19th century the area around Oxford Street had become a prosperous business district and the three buildings reflect this trend with evidence of subsequent alteration and use.
