Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Introduction

Historic Characterisation of Weston-super-Mare (Heritage Action Zone)

The project is a historic characterisation of Weston-super-Mare and its land and sea environs, funded by Historic England as part of their Heritage Protection Commissions programme. It has been primarily designed as a resource to support the work of the Great Weston Heritage Action Zone (HAZ). The HAZ programme is a recent initiative in which Historic England works with local partners in places with a rich and characterful historic environment to use this as a catalyst for building economic growth. Weston-super-Mare is one of the first round of HAZs, announced in spring 2017. The aim of the project was to assess and map patterns of historic character across the project area. Methods used drew upon historic landscape characterisation (HLC) and urban characterisation approaches, as well as the National Historic Seascape Characterisation methodology (NHSC).

A range of baseline information was used to enable the identification and mapping in GIS of areas of shared historic character, known as 'character types'. Two datasets were created; one holding information on use of the landscape, the HLC dataset, and the other comprising the seaward project area and those sections of the land with a clear historic or current relationship to the sea, the HSC dataset. Both were developed and stored in an ESRI Personal Geodatabase.

The nature and patterning (spatial and temporal) of HLC and HSC HCTs was then assessed and analysed. The output of this phase of analysis was a document for each HCT, known as a 'type text', including a map of current and former instances of the HCT at project area scale, representative photographs of the HCT where appropriate, and text summarising various facets of the HCT, including its heritage values. Each type text was then linked to the instances of that HCT within the GIS data so that it would show as a pop-up document when interrogating the GIS datasets using ESRI ArcGIS. This was facilitated through hyperlinks within the datasets accessible through a combination of a purpose-built ArcMap document (.mxd) and associated folder system for the datasets and type texts.

The final stage was the preparation of a Project Report, published as part of the HE Research Report series. This describes the project's methodology and sources, explains the GIS datasets created and gives an account of the development of the project area as revealed through the analysis of its character. So that information on HCTs was available to non-GIS users, all type texts were included as an appendix to the Project Report.

The project outputs were developed to be user-friendly with hyperlinks from the GIS data to type texts. Full operational use of this was facilitated by a package containing specifically filed data and a bespoke project ARCGIS mxd. The package is not part of the archive, but can be requested from Listing Information Services at Historic England via the contact details below:
