LOW HAM AND STAWELL HOUSE GARDENS

Description:  Earthworks of formal gardens associated with Stawell House. The earthworks represent garden terraces associated with Edward Hext's mansion which was built in the late 16th century. The gardens were remodelled in the 1780s. Futher earthworks represent a number of buildings and yards associated with the mansion. The land has been subject to the construction of a golf course in the late 19th century. During world War II 5 Nissen huts and 2 ancillary buildings were constructed as part of a mobile searchlight battery. The survey was carried out by RCHME field staff between 1994-96.
