PLACE FARM

Description:  This was a grange of Shaftesbury Abbey and the remaining buildings indicate the medieval division into an outer farmery court and the inner farmhouse courtyard. The outer gatehouse is probably of 14th century origin but was remodelled in the 15th and 16th centuries. The inner gatehouse is late 15th century. The farmhouse was built in the second half of the 15th century as a hall but has been extensively renovated and altered in the 20th century. The extremely fine tithe barn, the largest in England, is practically unaltered since it was built in the 15th century. There are original transepted entrances in the middle of each side but the other entrances have modern jambs and may be entirely modern insertions. The buildings enclosing the yard have all been extensively modernised but much of the walling is medieval.
