HANDSACRE HALL

Description:  Large rectangular Medieval moated enclosure within which are the collapsed remains of the 14th century and later Hansacre Hall. The building, empty from the early 1960s, was damaged and collapsed by vandals in 1973 leaving only parts of the front walls and wings standing. Remains of the Medieval hall were removed to Avoncroft Museum, and excavation and clearance of the site was undertaken in 1986-7. The hall was 14th century but the moat may be earlier, pottery found in the excavation ranging from possibly 12th century to 19th century. The northern arm of the moat has been partly infilled. The remains of a substantial pond bay lie to the south in Pool Meadow, marking the site of a formerly extensive fish pond.
