ASTON BURY

Description:  Manor house, built 1540-5, allegedly on the site of a grange and chapel. The house was altered in the 17th, 18th centuries, and in the 19th century was used as a farmhouse before being restored in 1908-9. In 1972 it was used for educational purposes. Two-storied rectangular block with cellars and a galleried through-attic. There are gabled stair wings at the rear. An excavation was undertaken to locate and date an outbuilding shown on a painting of 1800, but nothing was found. Documentary evidence suggests that the site was moated, and that the moats were converted into ornamental ponds in the post-Mediaeval period. No trace of either now remains. There are other earthworks in the garden, and a ha-ha.
