GUILDFORD HOUSE

Description:  A house built circa 1660-80 on a plot which contained an earlier house, parts of which survive inthe central block of this three pile building. In the early 18th century a major campaign of refitting occured, with panelling and fireplaces being replaced. In 1844 the house became a shop and alterations took place to create the shopfront. In 1957 the building was purchased by the Corporation and it became a centre for exhibitions and educational activities. Documentary sources and maps indicate there was a rear mid 19th wing, which no longer remains. The building contains a mixture of public and private rooms. The three-storey building is timber framed, with the top two storeys jettied out. At the front of the building the timber framing is clad with painted wood and to the rear with mathematical-tile and tile-hanging. The ground floor room at the rear is lit by two oriel windows, the one in the east wall appears to have been reassembled, and the evidence suggest that it was originally on the west wall. Several of the rooms in the house contain elaborate panelling, carvings and plastered ceilings.
