Site of cottage, White Down Copse, Killerton

Description:  A fallen tree-plate on the east of bank 17 in the easternmost (mid 19c) enclosure exposed bricks amongst its roots and in the earth it disturbed as it fell. It is possible to discern a platform at right angles to the bank, about 10m from it. The bricks are of two kinds, an irregularly shaped older brick 22 x 10 x 6 cm, and a more regular 23 x 11 x 6.5 cm kind. Both sorts are darkish orange-red in colour with inclusions, and neither have a frog. One or two are blackened, and it is possible they come from the stack or the bake oven. It is possible that there are cobbles under the tree root on the floor space. The cottage is marked on the tithe map no 349, it is given as cottage and garden (3 acres), under the ownership and occupation of Sir Thomas Dyke Acland. It is listed under Kellands. The garden does not have a boundary.
