Bishop's palace WSCC Site Nos. 1313.
Slindon House WSCC Site Nos. 1314.

On or close to the site of the 13 centruy Bishops Palace (archbishop of Canterbury's summer residence). The house has been much re-built with only a few C16th architectural details recognisable - the porch, a large mullioned & transoned window in the West front and a few windows at the back of the house. Square gatehouse no later than C15th base. Modern crenellation along the top. C13th arch is earliest surviving piece of architecture and can be located, bricked into a wall on the left of the entrance hall next to a doorway. The house is currently Slindon College, a boys boarding school.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMMENTS:
House has been so radically altered that it contains a whole mix of different architectural periods. The earliest dating back to the Bishop's Palace is all but eradicated and the exact location of the building unknown so efforts ought to be channelled in that direction.
