Site of barn, S of Birky Burn, Wallington

Description:  Rectangular building foundation on crest of knoll south of Birkyburn. Marked as 'barn' on C18 estate maps and shown on early editions of OS maps.
The remains of a rectangular building are faintly visible on air photographs. The site corresponds to that of a small building or structure which is marked on the 1866 OS 6" map. The same building appears on the 1777 Estate survey where it is surrounded by an enclosure (no 3 on the schedule) which is described as a 'stack garth'. On Greenwood's map (1828) the building is identified as an 'Outhouse' by which may have been meant a barn. The foundations were examined during a field visit on 16th July 2002 and found to measure 5.2m in width by an estimated 10m in length. [SNA62471]
