Description: House. Listed Grade II. C17th with C19th alterations. L plan with central staircase to main block. Slobbered rubble, stone dressings, slate roof. 2 storeys, 3 bays, left-hand bay breaks forward. Central entrance has Tuscan porch, enclosed in late-C19th with rockfaced stone; plank doors, rectangular fanlight. To right are remains of blocked late C17th entrance with moulded surround. C19th windows have plain surrounds - 2 to ground floor 3 to upper floor, all with sashes with glazing bars except window over porch which has 6 pane sashes. Two small upper floor casement windows to right of centre, one with reused C17th chamfered surround. Remains of several blocked C17th windows in former third storey. Shaped eaves modillions. Gable end and central ridge stacks. Hipped roof to projecting wing. Reputedly has origins as probably C16th peel tower. Interior not accessible. (1) 'Austwick Hall is one of the several dwellings in the North which have developed from pele towers'. (2) Austwick Hall is said to incorporate the remains of a medieval house, but is much altered externally. (3) Austwick Hall has a C19th appearance with no external evidence of antiquity. See GP.
