Description:
One of at least seven stone features, identifiable as the remains of kelp kilns, on Chapel Island and are potentially the most interesting found during the survey, as they appear larger and better preserved. Unfortunately, with one exception, they are covered by dense vegetation making measurements impossible without substantial clearance. Their superficial resemblance to prehistoric burial cairns led the Belfast Natural History and Philosophy Society to 'excavate' five of them in a morning in 1925 (Lawlor 1925, 35-26). This site, on the western side of the island, is densely covered with vegetation obscuring details (See also MRD 149:37-40; 168:90, 92-95).
