Description:
A watching brief was carried out at 72 Newgate Street by The Archaeological Practice in February 1999. A number of discrete, shallow features of late medieval date were seen towards the street frontage. No firm evidence of medieval structures was found. The features included a linear slot and two pits. Charcoal and heat-reddened clay were found as well as iron slag, suggesting industrial activity close by. Stratified pottery of 13th to 14th century was found was also found in the slot and one of the pits. In addition, the demolished remains of a probable post-medieval cellar were noted. (1)
