"PSH02",514068,"Void","Ditch","SG [514068] is the cut for an east/west aligned ditch in area 49. It contains SG's 514063, 514066 and 514075. It must terminate to the east and disappears under the baulk to the west. It is one segment of a ditch that continues to the east (SG [514074] and [514067]). The western terminus of ditch cut SG 514074 appears  to the east of this slot. It contains two deposits (SG's 514072 and 514073) which exactly match two deposits (SG's 514063 and 514066) within this cut. It can be concluded therefore that they are part of the same ditch system. This cut must terminate close to the east thereby appearing to form a small entrance way. It is also  a segmented ditch system associated with SG [514074]. **Linefeed**  **Linefeed** It is also possible to link these deposits with one found further east in ditch SG [514067] dated to the Bronze Age. Although no artefacts were found in this intervention it is possible to date it to the Bronze Age through this link. For a more in depth discussion on function, dating etc see SG [514067]. **Linefeed**  **Linefeed**  The distance between this intervention and terminus SG [514074] is c.4.5m. From estimating the position of the eastern terminus an entranceway approximately 3m can be imagined. Interestingly, this entranceway seems to be matched by late post-medieval/modern ditch SG 514046 (see Sg 514046 for discussion). **Linefeed**  **Linefeed** The deposits within the ditch seem to be formed from flood episodes from the nearby river Colne. This could be used to suggest a well irrigated, fertile land with perhaps a need for a few drainage ditches and gullies. While a drainage function for this ditch cannot be completely ruled out it would seem more likely from deposits (evidence of standing rather than running water), alignment, position and form to be part of a field boundary system.  **Linefeed**  **Linefeed** It is cut by early post-medieval ditch SG [514056] and probabaly late post-medieval/modern ditch SG [514046]. The reason for giving this a cut number was that just below the base of d136004 in d136005 was a base and side of a placed deposit of a MBA vessel. The vessel was almost complete and lying on its side, but there was some damage. The top edge of the vessel was missing (which was not caused through archaeological excavation!). The likely scenario was that as c136013 was being dug, the digging implement struck the vessel on its highest point thus damaging it in-situ.
