The ditch segment 514068 has been phased with the BA segments (SG's 514074, 514067 etc) as the fills are more indicative of the typology of similar BA fills in the vacinity **Linefeed** **Linefeed** **Linefeed** **Linefeed** **Database Administrator adds: This feature has been cast as Void as it had no interventions assigned to it. The mapping has been altered to ensure that the polygons assigned to this number now belong to 514040. This includes an extrapolated polygon which should be regarded as suspect","Dating" "PSH02",514068,"Void","Ditch","SG [514068] is the cut for an east/west aligned ditch in area 49. It contains SG's 514063, 514066 and 514075. It must terminate to the east and disappears under the baulk to the west. It is one segment of a ditch that continues to the east (SG [514074] and [514067]). The western terminus of ditch cut SG 514074 appears to the east of this slot. It contains two deposits (SG's 514072 and 514073) which exactly match two deposits (SG's 514063 and 514066) within this cut. It can be concluded therefore that they are part of the same ditch system. This cut must terminate close to the east thereby appearing to form a small entrance way. It is also a segmented ditch system associated with SG [514074]. **Linefeed** **Linefeed** It is also possible to link these deposits with one found further east in ditch SG [514067] dated to the Bronze Age. Although no artefacts were found in this intervention it is possible to date it to the Bronze Age through this link. For a more in depth discussion on function, dating etc see SG [514067]. **Linefeed** **Linefeed** The distance between this intervention and terminus SG [514074] is c.4.5m. From estimating the position of the eastern terminus an entranceway approximately 3m can be imagined. Interestingly, this entranceway seems to be matched by late post-medieval/modern ditch SG 514046 (see Sg 514046 for discussion). **Linefeed** **Linefeed** The deposits within the ditch seem to be formed from flood episodes from the nearby river Colne. This could be used to suggest a well irrigated, fertile land with perhaps a need for a few drainage ditches and gullies. While a drainage function for this ditch cannot be completely ruled out it would seem more likely from deposits (evidence of standing rather than running water), alignment, position and form to be part of a field boundary system. **Linefeed** **Linefeed** It is cut by early post-medieval ditch SG [514056] and probabaly late post-medieval/modern ditch SG [514046]. SG [514046] probably exists in this intervention as [514014] but has been recorded as a tree throw due to its heavy disturbance. **Linefeed** **Linefeed** Deposit SG514066 is evidence of a bank along the southern edge of the ditch. However, there are a few characteristics that can be discussed. Firstly, the fill of this cut could have been mistaken as secondary fill of a recut c136007, despite a very noticeable distinction between d136004, the fill of this cut, and d136005, the fill of c136007. The reason for giving this a cut number was that just below the base of d136004 in d136005 was a base and side of a placed deposit of a MBA vessel. The vessel was almost complete and lying on its side, but there was some damage. The top edge of the vessel was missing (which was not caused through archaeological excavation!). The likely scenario was that as c136013 was being dug, the digging implement struck the vessel on its highest point thus damaging it in-situ. It should also be noted that this is a recut within a recut and that this demonstrates another phase of the reuse of the original linear ditch cut c136009.","Interpretation" "WPR98",136014,"Void","Ditch","Recut - concave base, linear, sides lost through truncation.","Description" "WPR98",136014,"Void","Ditch","This cut is linear in plan and concave in section, unfortunately though because of heavy truncation in the past - not modern machining for archaeological excavation - the sides have been lost. However this cut, along with c136016 (same as c136007) and c136024 (same as c136009) share similarities, suggesting that there may be a possible terminus (see 136024 for discussion). In the 1m between the N and S facing section of c136024 there is a depth difference of 0.07m (which could be perceived to be modern truncation, although the earlier recut c136016 is shallower, as is c136024, which rises at its base from 0.6m in the north facing section to 0.45m in the south facing section), as well as a width difference of 0.2m, suggesting a possible terminus, destroyed by the dividing wall of Bed B N and S. If so, it is probable that the upcast of the original linear formed the eastern bank, which terminates at the same place as the ditch. It can be assumed from this that c136014, and previous cuts, respect the limit of the eastern bank; that the bank (and ditch) had an importance during successive and continual use.","Interpretation" "WPR98",136037,"Void","Ditch","Probably butt end recut. The interface was almost vertical and mirrors the recut of the known terminus to the south (E facing section cut c136037). Therefore it is suggested that this is a terminus of a recut ditch through the primary and secondary fills of c136024 and overall through the same fills of SG 136044 the original linear ditch cut, suggesting the first phase of reuse prior to the LBA. In this case however it seems to be more prominent. It also appears to have a higher concentration of gravel inclusions at this point. These points support the idea that water movement may have played a part in the formation process of this fill. It, first of all, must be pointed out that this section of the ditch is located at a point where the ditch bends, quite drastically. If water is flowing along the ditch then it would be at this point (a bend) that the material (especially the slower moving material) would come into contact with the sides and base the most. You would therefore expect more material to be deposited at this point. The water itself would also speed up on the bend and be forced into the side more than at a point where the ditch is straight. Therefore at this point more gravel (from the sides) would be dislodged and become part of the fill. Hence a more prominent, more gravely fill at this point.","Interpretation" "WPR98",138049,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138050,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138051,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138052,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138053,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138054,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138055,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138056,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138057,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138058,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138059,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138060,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138061,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138062,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138063,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138064,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138065,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138066,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138067,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138068,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138069,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138070,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138071,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138072,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138073,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138074,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138075,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138076,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",138100,"Void","Ditch","N-S linear ditch.","Description" "WPR98",138100,"Void","Ditch","This ditch has considerable proportions (depth and width) in its present state, and even if only moderately truncated its original construction would have been a task not to have been undertaken lightly. **Linefeed** **Linefeed** It would have had a great impact on the landscape as a dramatic feature, especially if, as is quite probable, it had an associated bank, constructed using its own upcast. This suggests that conditions , which led to the filling of the two ditches, remained relatively unchanged throughout both their 'lives'. This tentatively suggests that the basic/general use of the landscape in this area also remained the same for the same period of time.","Interpretation" "WPR98",138102,"Void","Other Fill","Mid-dark grey sandy clay with gravel inclusions.","Description" "WPR98",138102,"Void","Other Fill","This gravely fill is the first to occur within the large N-S ditch c138100, (unless of course the ditch was 'cleaned' and emptied at some point/s during its use). **Linefeed** **Linefeed** The gravel inclusions may have come from the sides and base of the ditch (i.e. gravel becoming dislodged from the features edges.). However, it is suggested that most of this material came from a bank situated on the western side of this ditch, the gravel inclusions are thought to come from a bank because the widest part of this fill is right at the top. It is also positioned next to the fill of the small ditch c138098 rather than a natural gravel edge. The ditch c138100 is also wider at this point. This suggests that the weight of the bank was too great for fill 138099. It therefore probably collapsed into ditch c138100 taking material from the bank with it. This explains why both the ditch and this fill are widest at this point.","Interpretation" "WPR98",140006,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",140009,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",140011,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",140016,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",140020,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",140139,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",140140,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",140141,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",140142,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",140152,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",140156,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",140176,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",140178,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",140179,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",140186,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",140187,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",141194,"Void",,"Voided because I can find no evidence of it existing otherwise.","Interpretation" "WPR98",146117,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",146243,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",146244,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",147355,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",147356,"Void","Undefined",,"No text in database" "WPR98",148013,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",148028,"Void","Undefined","SG voided since no contexts assigned to the SG","Description" "WPR98",149024,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",149095,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",149096,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",151105,"Void","Secondary Fill",,"No text in database" "WPR98",151146,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",151147,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",151150,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",151191,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",153021,"Void",,,"No text in database" "WPR98",155024,"Void",,"This number was subsequently voided","Interpretation" "WPR98",155029,"Void",,"This number was subsequently voided","Interpretation" "WPR98",156014,"Void",,"WHAAT?
