Bretton Hall and a large part of the surrounding parkland now lies in West Yorkshire. It was marked on 1st edition OS maps as a detached portion of Silkstone. The current hall was built in around 1720 for Sir William Wentworth (Hey 1981, 110). The park was landscaped by 1777 although there were some later additions. Richard Wood (the designer of Cannon Hall park) was consulted regarding the park improvements but it isn't clear if the design was his. (EH 2004) Before the development of the park this was probably an area of assarted woodland. There are still large areas of ancient woodland in the area and the surrounding fields retain long sinuous boundaries. There is no legibility of this within the park. There are a number of small disused stone quarries within the park which may have been the source of stone for the hall.
