This polygon encloses trees and ground preserved from the pre municipal Gleadless Valley. In this area the 1851 OS shows narrow 'strip' fields, characteristic of the post-medieval enclosure of open town fields by piecemeal enclosure of blocks of adjacent strips. This area is part of one of these strips which was preserved on construction of the rest of the estate by the presence of a large farmhouse (Springfield House) and its garden. Buildings are last shown in this polygon in 1985. Presently the space is underused and has problems typical of unadopted open space such as fly tipping and dereliction. Scrub is regenerating on the plot and attempts have been made to secure it from vehicular access by the construction of earthwork 'bunds'. The plot constitutes significant legibility of the landscape history of this end of the Gleadless Valley and has potential to become a valuable amenity.
