This core commercial area at the heart of Southey Green council estate neatly fossilises the extent of the ancient Southey Green as shown on the Fairbanks 1784 Enclosure Plan (see Sewell 2004 fig 4). The green was enclosed as a result of the 1784 Ecclesfield enclosure act (ibid). OS maps of 1855 and 1892 show that the area was occupied by housing and a public house (the Travellers Rest).
