Coniferous plantation dating to 1967-1971 and made up of Scots Pine, Japanese Larch and Lodgepole Pine (http://www.peakdistrict-education.gov.uk/Fact%20Sheets/fz13bur.htm). These woodlands sit within the geological basin of the Burbage Valley, eroded away from the surrounding Gritstone moorland as a result of its shale geology. Much of the valley has a covering of glacial 'head'. Previous type likely to have been moorland. Good legibility of former millstone quarrying. The origin of the moorland landscape is uncertain though this area is likely to be moorland by the Roman period (see Bevan 2003 for discussion of environmental evidence).
