The first shafts at Houghton Main Colliery were sunk in 1873 but the extensive spoil heaps didn't develop until the mid 20th century. The colliery closed in late 1993 (Hill 2001, 115-118) and some of the spoil heaps were later subject to opencast extraction as part of the clearance of the site. Undeveloped land on 2003 aerial photographs but area looks to be under redevelopment as new roads are in place. There remains partial legibility of the spoil heaps in surviving disturbed ground but there is no legibility of the former enclosed landscape. The date of the enclosures marked on historic maps is uncertain as there is no record of a parliamentary award for the area but the field were quite regular. Several of the fields within this polygon are named Park Field on a 1776 map of the area. This may indicate a former deer park in the area although there is no known record of one.
