Penistone Viaduct built as part of the Penistone to Huddersfield line. This line suffered from a high number of accidents and on 2nd February 1916 part of the viaduct collapsed and a train fell into the valley, no one was injured (Hey 2002, 161-162). The viaduct was rebuilt and still functions as a rail route. The viaduct spans an area of valley floor meadow land which was probably enclosed in the early 18th century. There is significant legibility of this enclosure beneath the viaduct.
