Royston is mentioned in the Domesday Book. This part of the village is less structured compared to the plots along the High Street but there are surviving medieval structures such as the church and chantry. There is also a possible medieval moated site at the old vicarage. These surviving earlier structures give partial legibility of the past landscape. In the late 19th/early 20th century this area became a focus for development of terraced housing. The area is still dominated by this although there has been some infilling since.
