Historic core of Darfield. There has been substantial alteration to this area since the 18th and 19th century but a number of buildings still remain with modern buildings interspersed between them. Darfield is known from the medieval period and contains a Norman style church (HSY7226). The town was very close to the route of the salt track running towards Doncaster, which was turnpiked in 1741 (Elliot 2001, 28). The settlement stayed small until the late 19th century when mining in the area became an important industry that brought new population into the area. There is no legibility of the medieval settlement.
