The rugby ground is first depicted on the 1968 OS map although it has been occupied by Doncaster Rugby Club since the early 1950s. Prior to this, the site was agricultural. It comprised small strip fields consolidated from the furlongs of the medieval open field. The open field area is shown still marked as 'West Field' on the 1st edition OS map of 1854. Legibility of the former character is fragmentary as all traces of the colliery have yet to be removed.
