Sand and gravel extraction pit on the site of a former woodland plantation. Extraction probably began in the mid 1950s when the Finningley Hall Park estate was sold, mainly for the purpose of gravel extraction. The plantation is marked on the 1st edition OS map of 1854. The enclosure award of 1778 shows the plot to be awarded to 'The Rector'. Prior to this, the land probably formed part of Hurst Common. Legibility of the former landscape is invisible.
