Historic maps show this area to be covered by thin reverse s shaped fields characteristic of agreed enclosure of a former medieval townfield. This pattern remained up to 1967 maps, after which there was significant boundary loss. The area does retain a number of s cured boundaries giving partial legibility of the former landscape. This polygon is mostly Great Houghton townfields. There are substantial remains of prehistoric field systems and enclosures surviving as earthworks in the area (see SMR).
