Moorland on Sugworth Edge. The area consists mainly of rough grassland with a few disused quarrying pits. The area contains a folly known as 'Boots Tower'. This was constructed in 1927 by Charles Boot of Sugworth Hall to provide work for the unemployed. The tower reuses 17th century material from Lower Hoyles farmhouse. Legibility of previous character types is uncertain as we have no evidence as yet for earlier landscapes. The origin of the moorland landscape is uncertain though this area is likely to be moorland by the Roman period (see Bevan 2003 for discussion of environmental evidence).
