The school is first depicted on the 1985 OS map. It replaced a cricket ground which had been depicted since 1923. Prior to this the area was a large field although some earthworks from Kimberworth Colliery are shown in the northern part of the polygon. The 1st edition OS map of 1854 shows a series of smaller fields. On the 1796 pre-enclosure plan, these strips are labelled 'back lands'. The field boundaries extended across Winter Hill Lane and therefore, probably predate it. The 'back lands' are probably the crofts attached to the tofts in the original planned village. Legibility of this is, however, zero.
