The Dearne and Dove Canal was opened in 1804 (Glister 1995, 118). The land alongside this part of the canal was labelled as a Dock Yard on 1855 maps and there was a boat maker in Canal Street in 1901 (May 2004, 7). The pub within the polygon is a modern building replacing Keel Inn that was also on 1855 maps. In the south east of the polygon were lime kilns and a small number of terraces some of which survive. The dock yard became an engineering works which has now been demolished and the canal was filled in during the 1980s. The route of the canal survives as do some buildings so legibility is partial. There is no legibility of the former open field that predated the canal.
