St. Anthony's church in the Hemsworth neighbourhood of the Gleadless valley estate. The Gleadless estate was designed by the city architect, J.L. Womersley. It was constructed in the late 1950s/ early 1960s in response to an urgent need for housing following world war 2. The buildings on the estate make full use of the topography of the area and continuity is implied through the retention of local names for each neighbourhood. On completion, the estate was described as 'Mediterranean in appearance'. Prior to the estate, the area consisted of fields with the characteristics of surveyed enclosure The area was enclosed from Hemsworth common during the enclosure of 1815. Legibility is invisible.
