First depicted as a plantation on the 1980 OS sheet SK28NE. Fragmentary legibility of remains of prisoner of war camp visible in woods. This camp built for general army use between 1905 and 1914 (SMR record) and reused during WW11. n.b. 1999 aerial photography and 2002 OS Landline evidence indicates small scale construction of detached housing underway. The origin of the moorland landscape is uncertain though this area is likely to be moorland by the Roman period (see Bevan 2003 for discussion of environmental evidence).
