Mecca Bingo occupies a large site that had lain as scrub for a number of years. Formerly the site was occupied by the old barracks, constructed in 1794. The new barracks (Hillsborough Barracks-Morrisons; HSY2353) was built to replace it in 1850 and terraced housing was constructed on the old site. The terracing appears to have been cleared as part of the slum clearance programme in the late 1960s/ early 1970s. The Fairbanks plan of 1795 shows a series of small irregular fields probably created from intake from 'Shales Moor'. Legibility is invisible.
