Development since 1999 of large semi-detached housing. Previous to this it is shown on maps as Penistone / Stanhope Isolation Hospital. This is first mapped on the 1929 OS 1:10560. Buildings still visible on aerial photos (c1999). After 1999 old buildings appear to have been removed and a modern access road has replaced the older entrance. Trees in the grounds survive as does the exterior boundary, which follows the boundary line of previous surveyed enclosures so legibility is fragmentary. Enclosure date from English 1985. The origin of the former moorland landscape is uncertain though this area is likely to be moorland by the Roman period (see Bevan 2003 for discussion of environmental evidence in region).
