Small irregular fields showing little organisational pattern. Some clustered around possible deserted farmstead sites. Place names 'Mire Field', 'Carr House' and 'Flash House' indicate the land was boggy and wet (Field 1972). This may indicate that these farms were founded in the early medieval period when there was an increase in the rural population and enclosure of poorer areas of land (Hey 1979, 72). There are no physical reminders of the moorland so legibility is invisible. The origin of the former moorland landscape is uncertain though this area is likely to be moorland by the Roman period (see Bevan 2003 for discussion of environmental evidence in region).
