This polygon covers the central core of Upperthorpe. The character is given by the shops in the area although a number of institutional buildings, such as the library and former baths are included. The name Upperthorpe is first mentioned in a document of 1383 (Hoperthorp). The 'Upper' is thought to derive from cooper meaning barrel maker. The area is marked as a series of cottages on the early Fairbanks plans. The Rawson family had a tannery in the vicinity. The commercial and institutional character developed from the end of the 19th century onwards. Legibility is invisible.
