Social housing built over part of the historic core of Monk Bretton. Prior to the current housing, 1893 maps onward show terraced housing built in an irregular grid pattern that has developed from the housing that existed in this area prior to this. Monk Bretton originated as the village of Bretton or Burton and took its extended name from Monk Bretton Priory which was founded in 1154 (Hey 1986, 59). The settlement was in place by the writing of the Domesday Book and there may have been houses within this polygon at that time. There is fragmentary legibility of the former village in the retained road patterns.
