Disused opencast mine on the site of the former spoil heaps associated with Rockingham Colliery which opened in 1873 and worked up until 1979 (Gill 2007b). It was owned by Newton, Chamber Thorncliffe Collieries. The spoil heaps extended across these field by 1966 mapping. It was formerly land was marked as unenclosed on Jefferys map of 1775. It was probably enclosed as part of the Nether Hoyland parliamentary award of 1799 (date from English 1985). The mine workings have all been removed but the site is still characterised by the spoil heaps associated with the mine. There is no legibility of the former landscape.
