Woodland, first recorded as a placename on the 1st edition OS (Smith 1961, vol 1 p 145), and respecting in its boundaries the form of the surrounding strip enclosures, which are themselves typical of the piecemeal enclosure of former open strip furlong units. Placename 'Thwaites' denotes 'Clearing' (ibid) and has been associated with the area since the early 14th century.
