A suburban commercial core fronting onto City Road along Manor Top. At the southern end of the polygon, at Elm Tree Hill, stands the Elm Tree Inn. This inn is marked on the 1st edition OS map of 1855. The inn probably originated to service traffic along the turnpike road. The Fairbanks plan of 1795 shows the area as fields with the characteristics of piecemeal enclosure. Prior to fields, the area was on the eastern and southern edge of Sheffield Park, which was a medieval deer park. Legibility of previous types is invisible.
