An area of large, mostly detached villas. The villas were developed in the latter half of the 19th century. They were built on land which was enclosed as part of the Ecclesall Enclosure award of 1788. Prior to this the area probably consisted of moorland. The origin of the moorland landscape is uncertain though this area is likely to be moorland by the Roman period (see Bevan 2003 for discussion of environmental evidence). Legibility is invisible.
