A recent redevelopment of a disused industrial site. The site was previously occupied by the Wadsley Bridge Works which was engaged in the manufacture of iron and steel. Basic archaeological investigation took place though a report was never written by the contractors. The works, variously known as the Franklin Works or Hillfoot Steel, was in operation by 1858. The works was constructed on fields probably created through piecemeal enclosure of the marshy Birley Carr. Legibility is invisible.
