This area of Victorian grid iron terraces was developed from the 1870s and mostly completed by the end of the 19th century. The suburb was provided with 'Primitive' and 'New Connexion' Methodist churches and board schools (separate polygons HSY 1865 and HSY1866). Together these form a comprehensively legible Victorian upper working class suburb. The 1851 60 inch to the mile OS depicts this area as the Club Gardens, Fenton Villa Gardens and Abbeydale Road Gardens. The Club Gardens are depicted as early as 1808 and represent a likely example of the type of early workers' garden discussed by Flavell (2003). No known evidence of open field agriculture this side of London Road - presumed piecemeal enclosure.
