Large clay works and open spoil heaps which rapidly expanded between 1965 and 1984 mapping to cover an area of ancient piecemeal enclosure. Shuts Hill is marked on historic maps of this area which may indicate that this was an area of open fields in the medieval period (Field 1972, 203). It is uncertain whether these fields would have been associated with the settlement at Cawthorne or another medieval settlement. There is no legibility of these field system in the current extractive site. The works currently produces clay drainage pipes.
