Swinnow Wood is designated an ancient replanted woodland. It is more than twice its current size on the 1st edition OS map of 1894 when it was part of Nottinghamshire. The wood appears to have been reduced in size to accommodate the building of Bircotes airfield which was operational during World War 2. The woodland is situated adjacent to a common and on a parish boundary which suggests it may have been used as wood pasture previously. Legibility of the former landscape is fragmentary as the area is still wooded.
