The Lumb is an area of ancient woodland immediately to the south of Rollestone woods. It occupies a steep sided valley with a stream at the base. It takes its name from the old English word for a deep pool. The whole area is thought to have previously formed part of the more extensive Herdyngs wood. Documentary evidence refers to Herdyngs wood in 1462. The wood was used for coppicing and charcoal burning platforms have been recorded during archaeological survey. Parts of The Lumb were felled during WW2 to provide timber for war purposes (NAA 2001, 36-40) Legibility is partial due to the surviving woodland and features within it.
