Waterlogged meadows along the course of the river Dearne. This area has probably been meadows since the medieval period. The land is likely to have been too wet for continuous arable farming although ridge and furrow has been identified by geophysics in the western end of the polygon (ASWYAS 2002b). The route of the Barnsley Canal runs through the area. The canal opened in 1799 and closed in 1953 and was later infilled over much of this area (Glister 1996, 219).
