North Gawber Colliery was opened in 1854 and took advantage of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway branch line which opened in 1850 (Taylor 2001, 73). North Gawber bought out Darton Colliery in 1948 and continued to work until 1985 (Gill 2007b). There is no survival of the mine buildings beneath the current scrubby spoil heaps. This was an area of piecemeal enclosure which had some strip like qualities. This was probably part of the medieval townfield. There is no legibility of this landscape.
