First shown as a steelworks on the 1923 25 inch OS map, the character of the site remains industrial although the exact nature of the works is not known. Prior to the building of the works the polygon shows Attercliffe Railway station. This is first depicted on the 1893 25 inch OS map. The 1851 60 inch town plan shows the site dominated by gardens or allotments. These replaced the enclosed strips shown on the Fairbanks plan of 1795 which developed from the Crossgate field which was one of Attercliffe's open town fields.
