This area was opened up to public recreation between the publication of the 1967 and 1987 OS 1:10,000 maps following the clearance of late 19th century back to back and high density terraced housing. The southernmost playground is an excavated area representing a fragmentary survival of the former Occupation Road Colliery shown on the 1851 OS. This area is likely to have been wooded for much of its medieval history lying between the area of Hall Carr enclosed by surveyed enclosure and the Burn Greave Wood.
