Area of probable ancient woodland. Boundaries haven't changed since 1813 Hunshelf Enclosure award map. The woodland name, 'spring' indicates that it was managed as a coppice woodland at some point. Most coppice woodland fell out of use by the mid 19th century (Jones 1997,48) the date for this wood is unknown. There is fragmentary legibility of the former spring wood as there has been quite a lot of tree loss in recent years and there is no sign of earlier coppiced trees but the former boundaries remain.
