Plantation which has clearly not been managed as woodland for some years. Slightly disperse tree pattern and along the edge of the moor a large area has reverted back to moorland providing partial legibility of previous type. Shown on 1851 map as mixed woodland. Date of planting estimated at a time when oak prices were high because of demands from tanners (Rackham 1990, 96). The date of origin of the moorland is uncertain but it had probably developed in this area by the Roman period (see Bevan 2003 for discussion of environmental evidence in the area).
