Detached housing which was probably constructed in the mid 1960s. The housing replaced an earlier house, Burntstones Lodge, which was set in wooded grounds and was depicted on the 1st Edition OS map of 1855. Prior to this the area consisted of fields with straight regular boundaries indicative of surveyed enclosure, probably as part of the Upper Hallam enclosure award of 1805. It has been suggested that the name 'Burnt Stones' derives from the destruction of a nearby village/ hamlet (possibly Hallam) as a result of William 1st 'Harrying of the North'. Legibility is invisible The origin of the moorland landscape is uncertain though this area is likely to be moorland by the Roman period (see Bevan 2003 for discussion of environmental evidence).
