Rockingham Colliery was opened in 1873 and worked up until 1979 (Gill 2007b). It was owned by Newton, Chamber Thorncliffe Collieries. The colliery was built on land that was marked as unenclosed on Jefferys map of 1775. It was probably enclosed as part of the Nether Hoyland parliamentary award of 1799 (date from English 1985). The mine workings have all been removed by later opencast mining. There is no legibility of the former landscape.
