The character of this area of piecemeal enclosure countryside (which includes the small hamlet of Butterthwaite has been significantly affected by its enclosure by major transport infrastructure projects. To the west runs the former 'South Yorkshire Railway (c1850), while to the east the countryside was directly truncated by the dual carriageways of the M1 motorway (this section opened to traffic in 1968 - http://www.iht.org/motorway/m1contracts.htm [accessed 19th Dec 2005]) Partial legibility of piecemeal enclosures.
