The hamlet of Newton stands within the Newton conservation area. The settlement is first recorded in the Poll Tax returns of 1379. Earthworks within the surrounding fields are likely to be related to the shrunken medieval village. It is uncertain when or why depopulation began. At present, the hamlet consists of farm buildings and cottages some of which are 18th/ 19th century in origin. Legibility of the former character is partial due to associated earthworks.
