Church with pre-conquest aspects surviving in situ (Ryder 1982, 95). Sited prominently in the centre of Penistone with the town gradually growing up around it. The vicarage is probably of a later date to the church itself and is now reused as a guest house. Origins of the site are uncertain. It is possible that the land was unenclosed moor adjacent to the original farmstead which grew into Penistone. The origin of the former moorland landscape is uncertain though this area is likely to be moorland by the Roman period (see Bevan 2003 for discussion of environmental evidence in region).
