Rother Valley Country Park was opened to the public in 1983. It was planned as part of the landscape reinstatement scheme after a period of open cast mining. Prior to this the land was agricultural, situated along the floodplain of the River Rother. The Aston Cum Aughton and Wales enclosure plan of 1768 depicts the area as already enclosed. Legibility of the former landscape is zero- it was removed during the open casting and a new landscape created in its place.
