Industrial area situated alongside the railway track. There are steel founders and other works interspersed with more commercial premises. Industrialisation began in the second half of the 19th century with the construction of the wagon works and gathered pace throughout the 20th. Before this, the area consisted of agricultural land. The original pattern of enclosures was created by a programme of drainage on Balby Carr. This resulted in a series of straight and regular fields aligned on the drainage ditches. Legibility of the former landscape is invisible.
