This polygon covers the site of the former Markham Main colliery. The sinking of the original shaft was interrupted by World War One and the colliery finally began production in 1924. It ceased operation in 1996. Since then most of the buildings have been demolished. Work is ongoing to reclaim the site and develop it for other uses. Prior to the colliery, the site was agricultural. It comprised small strip fields consolidated from the furlongs of the medieval open field. The open field area is shown still marked as 'West Field' on the 1st edition OS map of 1854. Legibility of the former character is fragmentary as all traces of the colliery have yet to be removed.
