Large iron and steel works established in present buildings around 1855 by Davy Bros. Manufacturers of steelworks plant such as rolling mills, steam hammers and steam engines. During the 20th century the plant was transferred to Cammells and later to the Tempered Spring Company (Bayliss 1995). Tempered Spring were subject to a hostile takeover in 2001 and it was announced that the plant would close (with the loss of 70 jobs) in November 2004. The 1851 OS plan shows this site as mostly gardens with a smaller earlier 'Park Iron Works' to the east. This site evolved from the water powered Smith Wheel described by Crossley et al (1989, 116)
