Within the historic township of Handsworth to the south of the former minor village of Richmond these houses represent the southern fringe of the Woodthorpe Estate. There appears to be a wider variety of housing plans in this area than that to the municipal area north of Woodthorpe Road and it is possible that these houses were intended for private sale. This area was formerly surveyed enclosure of Woodthorpe Common (possibly by the parliamentary award for Handsworth of 1808 (English 1985, 63).
