This area is depicted as mostly clear of trees on the 1967 6 inch OS map. Prior to this, maps show the area as woodland. Busk derives from 'Bush Meadow' (Smith 1961,215). 'Busk Meadow' is first mentioned in Harrison's survey of 1637 (See Scurfield 1986). The boundaries of the polygon, especially taken with that of the school (HSY912), match those shown on the first edition OS map of 1855 and the Fairbanks plan of 1795. This boundary morphology constitutes partial legibility of the extent of the former woodland. In the medieval period this area probably formed a compartment within Shirecliffe Deer Park.
