Large villas with attached grounds (first depicted on 1989 maps) built on the shafts and spoil heaps from Hall Royd Colliery which was in operation from 1861 to 1928 (Gill 2007b). There are no physical aspects of the colliery site remaining as the land has been fully landscaped. Prior to the sinking of the mine this was an area of piecemeal enclosure, possibly of an early date, on the edge of Silkstone Common. There is no legibility of this landscape.
