Area of enclosed fields with modern boundaries which are first shown on 1966 maps. Prior to this the area was characterised by small enclosures within long sinuous boundaries which indicate they were assarted from ancient woodland. The change in boundaries is likely to be due to opencast coal mining which was widespread in this area of Yorkshire from 1942 when the Directorate of Opencast Coal was created (Gray 1976, 41). There is no legibility of the landscape prior to the boundary change.
