First edition maps show an iron works on this site which had become disused by 1893. The current housing developed by 1931 mapping. There is fragmentary legibility of the ironworks as some building survive. The Ironworks is likely to have developed after 1804, when the Dearne and Dove Canal opened (Glister 1995, 118). By 1848, pig-iron was being "manufactured in large quantities" (Lewis 1848 [accessed 04/01/08]).
