Extractive / Industrial complex now the headquarters of conglomerate. Founder site of large company now multinational first depicted on 1893 OS mapping. Historic OS maps record Hazlehead, Crowedge and Sledbrook collieries, Hepworth Iron Works, Hepworth Fire Clay Works and Hepworth Tile Works. The collieries went out of use between 1948 and 1955. This is likely to be the reason for the railway (SMR PIN 03793/01) falling into disuse. Place name 'Kiln Hill' (1851 map) at SE196 042 indicative of post-medieval pottery or brick industry. Former land uses also include postmedieval coal mining and pasture. EIA by Banks Group (1999) indicates good survival of post-medieval industrial features in areas of site not covered by modern open cast so legibility is significant. The origin of the former moorland landscape is uncertain though this area is likely to be moorland by the Roman period (see Bevan 2003 for discussion of environmental evidence in region).
