Church which was originally a medieval chapel-of-ease within the parish of Tankersley. Much of current building dates to the 18th and 19th century but fragments of medieval structure remain (Ryder 1984). The hamlet of Wortley has grown up around the church. This area may have been wooded in the pre medieval period as there is evidence of assarting in the surrounding fields but there is no legibility of this in the church.
