Historic Domesday Village with very little loss and replacement since mid 19th century. The pattern of property boundaries conforms to one of a typical medieval strip village with traditional narrow plots set between a main street and (to the east) a 'Back Lane'. Probable built over market place at the centre of the village where lies a 13th century cross shaft and base. Magilton described the village as "probably the most spectacularly attractive village of the Doncaster District… very many of the village houses contain C17 or earlier elements" (1977, 51). Unknown legibility of earlier layout.
