The wood is first mentioned in 1332, although it is unclear what type of woodland it is at that date. The wood is being managed as a coppice woodland by 1616. Coppice woods generally fell out of use towards the end of the 18th century as coke became the preferred fuel. Sheffield Parkway was constructed through the woods in 1970. Legibility is partial as the woodlands is designated as ancient and contains evidence of its past management practices.
