This is an area of open pasture along the floodplain of the River Idle. The course of the River Idle, prior to canalisation, can be traced on aerial photographs. The area is labelled as 'Bawtry Carr' on maps suggesting a more scrubland and wooded environment previously. An enclosure at the north-eastern end of the polygon is intriguingly marked as 'Buck Fleet' on the 1st edition OS map of 1854. Legibility of the former landscape is fragmentary as the area is still partly a scrubby wetland.
