This linear parkland has been created from land (formerly piecemeal enclosure) left rough on development of the Parson Cross Estate. The natural depression at its base (along which now runs a made pathway) represents the course of the Tongue Gutter stream which provides a natural punctuation to the physical landscape in this area. This feature formed the edge of the medieval town fields of Ecclesfield at its eastern edge and now lies between the pre and post WWII phases of development of Parson Cross.
