North Gawber Colliery was opened in 1854 and took advantage of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway branch line which opened in 1850 (Taylor 2001, 73). The large spoil heaps which now dominate this are were not developed until the late 20th century. The colliery closed in 1985 (Gill 2007b). This was an area of strip fields which were probably part of the medieval townfield. There is no legibility of this landscape.
