This plantation woodland (depicted in 1877) has straight sided boundaries possibly laid out at the time of the parliamentary enclosure of Hathersage parish in 1830 (date from Kain et al 2004 - online catalogue). Lies to the eastern edge of the gritstone moorland of the Dark Peak. The origin of the moorland landscape is uncertain though this area is likely to be moorland by the Roman period (see Bevan 2003 for discussion of environmental evidence).
