An enclave of late Victorian and Edwardian buildings around a public open space within a larger area of post war redevelopment. The buildings are largely within the area of the pre 18th century city centre (See Goslings 1736 plan of Sheffield) but represent later rebuilding of the commercial core of the city. They include the 'Yorkshire Bank' formerly the 1871 post office; the 'Sheffield United Gas Light Co.' offices on High Street; 'The White Building' (1909) clad in faience; former 'Post Office' (1910) ; and further Edwardian commercial buildings around the underused Fitzalan Square. No legibility of the medieval town.
