Modern private housing estate built on the site of the former Middlewood Hospital. The hospital was opened as the 'Yorkshire Asylum' in 1878. Prior to this the site comprised open fields with regular and straight boundaries, indicative of parliamentary enclosure. The fields were probably enclosed as part of the Wadsley & Loxley Chase enclosure award of 1789 from Wadsley Common. Legibility of the previous landscape is partial as some of the former institutional buildings remain, although converted to residential use.
