This directory contains the specialist identifications for pottery. The three specialisms (Medieval, Pottery and Romano-British pottery) are all contained within the two files: SpecialistPottery.csv and SpecialistPotteryDecoration.csv. Field descriptions for the fields in the two files are provided in the SpecialistPotteryFieldDescriptions.csv and SpecialistPotteryDecoration.csv. The specialisms can be separated by querying on the Specialism field using the values "Romano-British pottery", "Medieval pottery" or "Romano-British pottery". The data is derived from a relational database with data directly entered by the specialists. The data has been processed for archiving to simplify the original Framework archaeology database structure. As a result several fields exist giving codes and the descriptive values for the codes used to describe the same aspect of the objects listed. Since the description of pottery decoration is a one to many relate: ie each sherd family might display multiple types of decoration, the decoration data is provided as a second table. However, a free text summary of a sherd family's decoration (where described by the specialist) has been constructed by computer and stored in the field Decoration in the parent table: SpecialistPottery.csv. This data is the source for the pottery data in the publication archive and the file Finds.csv and records in the source table can be linked using the fields SourceRecID and ObjectID as appropriate.
