The Finds Framework Archaeology's finds can be identified on multiple occasions: on site by the field staff or finds support staff and later by the specialists employed to produce the definitive report on the material. Finds data is therefore presented in two ways 1: Summary Data The file Finds.csv represents a complete listing of the finds and includes a summary of the specialist provided identifications for the classes of material requiring specialist identifications. Earlier identifications of the specialist identified objects have therefore been removed from this file and replaced with the specialist's identification. 2: Specialist Data Since the data in Finds.csv represents a summary of specialist examined material more detailed observations about some objects can be found in the directory SpecialistFindsData. For example Finds.csv does not record any information concerning butchery practices observed on animal bones. These records can be found in the individual specialist databases. Usually the field ObjectID can be used to cross-reference the identifications on those occasions where small find object numbers were not assigned. Usage of fields in the summary file Finds.csv Different specialisms like to record specific aspects of their objects in specific fields. For practical reasons these have been mapped to one of four fields: Object, ObjectSubGroup, Type and TypeSubType. For each material the information of interest can be found in the fields given below: Animal Bone Element (or body part) is described in Object. No use of Object SubGroup Animal Species is described in Type, no use of SubType The material can be summarised by identifying only at species level by entering Unidentified as the element value Burnt Flint Unworked Default value entered for Object. No use of other fields since these finds can only be described at the material level Burnt Stone Form of the object whether worked or unworked in Object. No use of ObjectSubType Lithology (if required) described in the Type field Tools fashioned from stone should be described as material type Flint CBM (ceramic building material) Object and Object subtype to describe form Type and Subtype not used but reserved for fabric analysis Clay pipe Object field only used to describe the form of the object Copper Alloy Uses Object and ObjectSubGroup is optional to identify form Optional use of Type and SubType Coins will typically use all four categories: Object = Coin or Token ObjectSubGroup = Denomination Type = Issuer (Roman emperor etc) and : SubType = Mint Flint Uses Object and ObjectSubgroup to identify form Type and SubType not used Fired Clay Uses Object and ObjectSubGroup to identify the form Type and SubType not used Glass Uses object and sometimes ObjectSubgroup to identify the form (glass beads for example) Type and SubType not used Human Bone Object used to describe body part Species not described as indicated in Material An example of how the Material field operates as a double-function field referring also to specialism Iron Uses object and sometimes ObjectSubgroup to identify the form Not used Jet Use object only Type and SubType not used Tools fashioned from stone should be described as material type Flint if appropriate Lead Lead Alloy Uses Object only to describe form Type and SubType not used Leather Uses Object only to describe form Type and SubType not used Species could be described in Type fields if required Other Metal Uses Object only to describe form Type and SubType not used Plastic Uses Object only to describe form Pottery Uses Object and ObjectSubGroup to describe the Vessel form Use Type and SubType to describe the ware or fabric Shale Uses Object and ObjectSubGroup to describe the form Reserved for lithology but currently not used Shell Uses object to describe form. Default value for unfashioned (ie animal remains) Species of shell described in Type field Silver see Copper Alloy see Copper Alloy As Copper Alloy (particularly when referring to coins) Slag Uses object Stone Uses Object and ObjectSubGroup Lithology described in Type and Subtype (optional) Textile Uses Object Unidentified Uses Object Wall plaster Default value of wall plaster Wood Uses object and ObjectSubType Plant species described in Type
