1,"Unenclosed land","this term is used for land which is not defined by a series of internal and external boundaries. If there is evidence of other activity within an area of unenclosed land this will take precedent i.e. mineral extraction."

12,"Communications","This refers to polygons which are defined by features associated with communications routes, for example major lock systems, airports major road junctions etc.  As a standard linear communications features will not be recorded"
13,"Commercial","This relates to commercial features, primarily those related to retail or large scale business undertakings"
14,"Institutional","This term is used for institutions and includes land associated with them.  This may be in contrast to the separation of designed landscape and settlement however the grounds of institutions are an integral part of them and cannot be separated so easily"
2,"Enclosed land","This term will be used where the historic character of the landscape is defined by a series of enclosing boundaries, internal and external."
3,"Woodland","This term will be used where the landscape is defined by woodland"
4,"Water","This term will be used for bodies of water such as lakes and reservoirs.  Where there is evidence that the body of water has previously being used for extraction, this will be recorded as extraction re-used"
5,"Military","This will be used for large scale military features"
6,"Coastal","This term will be used to refer to areas which display a coastal characteristic although q=where it can be demonstrated that another broad type is more appropriate this will be utilised e.g. alum extraction"
7,"Settlement","This broad type will be utilised for built settlements, including individual farms not under 1 Ha.  This is a refinement after a certain amount of the4 pilot areas have been classified"
8,"Designed landscape","This term is used to refer to designed landscapes of a variety of types including parkland, cemeteries, allotments, deer parks"
9,"Industrial","This term is used to describe a polygon which is dominated by industry.  This should not necessarily be seen as heavy industry and may include such areas as are associated with small scale tile and brick production"
