Appendix 2. Trench 57. Excavations were conducted by members of the Passmore Edwards Museum field unit, on the east bastion of Tilbury fort between the 2nd March 1992 and the 3rd March 1992. The excavations were a continuation of excavations carried out in 1991 (TF-1 91). The work was to be carried out in advance of further safety works by English Heritage staff to remove material from the east bastion bank above the bastion wall, to the east of trenches 54 and 55. The work was funded by English Heritage, negotiated for and directed by Peter Moore for the museum, and supervised by the author. A single trench was planned across the affected area, measuring 1m x 4m, to be excavated by hand. The area covered by trenches 54 and 55 (fig. 3) had been taken down, exposing the west facing elevation of a previously recorded wall, (4526). An attempt had also been made to remove the concrete of a defensive structure recorded during the previous years excavations, (4525) (fig.5), and to grade the bank to the south, leaving a steep slope from south to north. After removal of topsoil at the top of this slope it was discovered that (4525) extended to the south below the topsoil for an unknown distance. The original trench was abandoned at this point in favour of exposing the entire extent of (4525) within the area affected by the safety works (fig. 11).
