About

ADS-easy

The ADS-easy system, developed by the Archaeology Data Service (ADS), allows depositors to upload digital content and associated metadata from archaeological fieldwork and research securely to the ADS, from where it can be added to the growing list of resources within the archive catalogue. ADS- easy allows you to:

  • create and manage projects more effectively
  • generate project metadata as the basis of the resource discovery metadata
  • upload digital data directly into the ADS repository
  • develop a selection and retention policy through adding and removing data according to specific criteria
  • generate costing information using the costing calculator
  • automate the creation of technical metadata
  • enhance data through the creation of file level metadata which can be created within the interface, or uploaded using a pre-populated template
  • submit your archive to the ADS

ADS-easy offers significant advantages to depositors over traditional methods of archive creation and submission, allowing for

  • data management from the outset of a project
  • implementation of time efficiency measures for both depositor and archive
  • flexibility in the creation of the digital archive
  • involvement in selection and retention
  • control over the costs and economics of deposition
  • security during the submission phase

SWORD-ARM project

The development of ADS-easy comes as part of the SWORD-ARM project, funded by JISC. SWORD-ARM has allowed the ADS, working with project partners in the universities of Southampton, Glasgow and Manchester, to develop and enhance both ingest and charging policies by creating a semi-automated upload and metadata acquisition tool. Through the project the ADS has been able to streamline and refine the deposition process and deliver real benefits to depositors in terms of their ability to deposit data, create and validate metadata, engage in selection and retention, manage multiple deposits and, crucially, to manage cost estimation and charging processes. This will be achieved through the development of the ADS-easy system.

SWORD-ARM represents a significant enhancement to ADS’s role as a discipline-based repository, and an embedding of our role in a number of HE institutions. While the development of the ADS-easy system has improved the ability of ADS to handle increasing volumes of data and to charge directly for deposit, it will also improve the service offered to our depositors in terms of cost transparency, ease of use and speed of deposit.
