Changing meanings of rock art

Rock art panel

Changing meanings and uses

Rock art was created and used by people for over two thousand years before its meaning eventually became lost. It is likely that the significance of the carvings changed as different people encountered it and ways of thinking about the world developed. Waddington (1998) proposed that the carving tradition can be divided into three phases: Early Neolithic, Late Neolithic, and the Early Bronze Age.
