Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Reports on a geological, geomorphological, and sedimentological study that provides a detailed trans-zonal framework for examining the significance of an eclectic variety of artefactual and documentary evidence of human activity on the tidal stream (Magor Pill). The shoreline has retreated a minimum of 800m since the Iron Age and Roman times, exposing silted up palaeochannels that yielded small amounts of stratified occupation debris (IA, RB, med and post-med), together with baskets and hurdles relating to post-medieval and probably also medieval fishing. One palaeochannel contained the wreck of a thirteenth-century clinker-built boat carrying iron ore. The largest quantities of occupation debris, however, were transposed and mixed into the semi-mobile foreshore gravels. This material demonstrates that at Magor Pill there had been a thriving RB settlement, a medieval port, and post-medieval cattle-trading activity. There is also evidence for the repositioning of sea defences at various periods. | ||||||||||||||||||
